Day two
We live under a big sky. It is a canvas that stretches across the heavens, and it becomes the backdrop of my life when I look up. Focusing only on what is right in front of me, looking down, watching my feet on that road I’m traveling is important, but dwelling on the particulars of the journey is myopic. Hmm, without the sky, life can become dreary. I just need to look up.
God created the sky, I never thought about this. But, in the story of creation, one day was spent on creating the sky.
And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning–the second day.
Genesis 1: 6-8
One day of the 6 days of creation was spent on creating the sky, and one day of the 6 days of creation was spent on creating light. That means one third of creation happened before something substantial (wrong word), maybe concrete happened, light and the sky were the backdrop of everything else was created, culminating with the creation of man, day six. The foundation that man was built on was the sky and light. Without that, I am living in darkness and looking down, but, because of that, all I have to do is look up. The beautiful blue of a cloudless sky, the wonder of a cloud filled sky particularly when the sun is rising and falling. Light filtered through the clouds in the sky. What a beautiful backdrop for life.
Psalms 19 remind us what happened on day two of creation.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
Psalms 19:1-4
I took this picture On my walk this morning. This picture might represent the dreariness of my “walk”, a picture of a telephone pole and some wires. But beyond all of that is the sky. But a beautiful backdrop. I need to look through the dreariness and see the beauty.
I live under a good God and I live under a big sky. I just have to look up.
This Psalms 19 continues on, if you’re wondering what it says, stay tuned.
